Implementing Real Change In One Hour
If you are pressed for time, welcome to the club. Everyone is. What differentiates productive people from procrastinators is not the amount of time they have, but the amount of highly focused energy they can devote to a given task in a limited time span. If you are like most busy people, you cannot completely reshape your entire schedule on a whim, but you can block off one hour to concentrate on a specific project.
Everyone gets the same number of minutes in an hour. What you do with them and how you invest them will ultimately determine what you’ll get out of all the hours in your life.
Answer these seven questions to zero in on the change you want to make:
- What do you need to change? Be clear, specific, and detailed.
- Thinking critically, what is the structure of the change?
- Thinking creatively, what other solutions are possible?
- What are your next steps? Document them and set deadlines for each one.
- What initial action can you schedule to begin the process?
- How will you evaluate your progress? Compare your results to your planned steps.
- How will you reward yourself for completing the change?
While time may seem like the thing you need most of, it turns out that isn’t true. What you need is focus.
By taking an hour every week to focus in on what you are wanting to change, you can train yourself to tap into your mental resources. Critical thinking involves asking questions, then ex-amining all the arguments and evidence using facts, not emotions.
If fear of being judged is keeping you from implementing ideas that may change your life, what else is that fear holding you back from?
